Are you having trouble with your HVAC system? If so, then you need to decide if you have been properly maintaining it. By knowing how to keep it clean and up to date, you can save time and money in the long run.

Luckily, HVAC upkeep does not have to be hard work. Below, we give our essential tips on HVAC maintenance.

Replace Your Filters

Filters are an important part of the HVAC system. They prevent dirt and detritus from flowing through into your home. Due to their nature, they can become easily clogged and dirty.

This is bad for two reasons. Firstly, it makes your system work overtime, increasing energy usage as more power is required to push air through. Secondly, the air that does get through can be dirty.

Luckily, filters are very cheap to purchase. They are also easy to replace if you do decide to do it yourself. This heating service will be able to replace filters and perform any HVAC repair at an affordable cost.

Clean the Drain Line

Your AC unit needs to produce water in the form of condensation. This is released from a drain line. If this drain line becomes blocked, it can cause a number of HVAC problems.

The drain line will let water back up, which can result in damage to the interior of your home. Cleaning the line is very easy. All you need to do is unplug it from the system, and pour down bleach or household vinegar.

HVAC Maintenance in Outdoor Areas

Your outdoor unit needs to take in air from the environment. As this is outside your home, it is prone to bringing in all the debris from the yard or street. If you have items blocking its air intake, this makes it even harder to function.

Make sure you have at least two feet of clearance around the outside unit. Cut back any shrubbery, and make sure you rake away any leaves. You should also remove outdoor furniture and relocate it.

Check Air Ducts

If your air ducts are damaged, air will leak into the places you do not require it. This will also mean that you have to push the system harder to get the result you want in the intended rooms.

Turn the system on and perform a check on the ductwork and vents. If you can not feel any air at all, make sure the vents are open.

You should also check for any internal damage caused by pests. You can do this by looking for signs of damage to the insulation, which may be coming away and blowing through the ducts.

Clean the Coils

If your unit fails to turn on, it may be a blocked coil. The coils are essential for the airflow in your unit. They should have instructions on how to clean them contained in the documentation for your system.
