IN WHAT FORMAT CAN I DOWNLOAD YOUTUBE VIDEOS?
Video download apps can usually choose the file format. The most common are MP4, 3GP, AVI and MOV. The choice of format and quality settings affects who can view the video and the quality of the video.
If you don’t care too much about the video quality, 3GP is the file format. Good for small screen phones, terrible for others, but the files are small. This is important for older phones as they usually don’t have a lot of onboard storage or memory expansion.
For other devices, MOV is Apple’s video format and works on all Macs, AVI is developed by Microsoft and works happily on PC, MP4 is a video equivalent to MP3, and works on almost any device. We recommend sticking with MP4 for best compatibility.
HOW ABOUT THE VIDEO QUALITY?
The next decision is video quality. If you are downloading through a service like ClipConverter-you can choose the video source in the process described on the previous page of this article. That’s because YouTube streams in a variety of qualities, from 3GP for traditional mobile phones to 1080p high definition for large HD displays.
Besides 3GP, there are four options for your computer, smartphone or tablet: 360p, 480p, 720p and 1080p. The higher the quality, the larger the file size, so the trick is to balance quality and size. Unless you’re actually watching it on a big screen, you can manage it without 1080p quality if you don’t have extra storage space. Not good for HD displays).
Unless you have unlimited storage, a trade-off usually means finding the lowest video quality acceptable on the display where you want to watch the video.
If the video you download has music, it doesn’t matter which video quality you choose. The bit rate of the soundtrack is the same whether it is 480p video or 1080p video. YouTube’s audio and video streams are separate, so adjusting the video quality has no effect on the quality of the soundtrack.
