If you’re anything like the majority of Americans, after the COVID-19 pandemic, you started to cook and create at home more than you ever had before. Being forced to stay in helped push many of us to create better home eating habits, and we gained many skills as a result.
Even though we’ve generally returned to eating out, you may have kept up your desire to spend time in the kitchen. Trying out new ideas and recipes, after all, is a great way to pass the time and a wonderful way to feel creative.
If you feel like branching out from your usual stable of recipes, you may want to consider how to make homemade gummies. Making this favorite sweet of many can be a real adventure, and it isn’t too difficult or expensive either.
What do you need to know about making homemade gummies? Read on and we’ll walk you through the basics.
What You’ll Need To Have
There are a few different ways to make gummies at home, and exactly how you’ll go about the task might vary depending on your hopes for the final product. For example, if you wanted to make your own cbd gummies, you might follow a different recipe than what you’ll find below.
For today’s purposes, we’ll be focusing on how to make relatively healthy gummies for your home. While gummies are an enjoyable sweet, it is possible to make them in a way that isn’t all sugar – healthy gummies can be enjoyable and good for you.
How do you make nutirent-rich gummies? You really only need a few simple ingredients.
You’ll want to start with real fruit. Oranges and strawberries are likely the easiest to work with (and perhaps create the yummiest result) but any sort of fruit that you have an affinity for should do the trick.
Outside of the fruit, you’ll also want to pick up some light coconut milk, and some honey, and ensure you have salt and water at home. Last but not least, you’ll want to pick up some gelatin – preferably the grass-fed variety if you want to keep things as healthy as can be.
You’ll also need a blender on hand – we’ll explain why in a bit.
What is Gelatin?
Gelatin is the most important ingredient when it comes to making gummies, but it’s also the one your average shopper is likely to know the least about.
Gelatin is a tasteless and colorless protein that is made from collagen that is broken down. Gelatin provides a ton of amino acids and other nutrients, and it supports digestive gut health within the body, as well as strong bones and joints.
Some studies even indicate that it might be able to improve sleep patterns.
When gelatin is cooled, it becomes a sticky adhesive, and easily gels together into globs. For this reason, it can be used to easily create gummies. Most gummies are either made from gelatin or collagen, but generally, gelatin is easier to digest and break down in the body – it’s the same thing jello is made from.
Making Homemade Gummies
Now that you have all your ingredients together, what do you need to do to make your homemade gummies? It’s not too complicated.
You’ll want to start by blending the fruit you picked out into the form of a fruit puree. Pull out your blender (remember what we talked about?) and blend the fruit together until it is completely broken down. If you need to, add water to the blender to help with this task.
Strain your puree mixture to help get out any pulp, seeds, or remaining chunks. The puree should be smooth and liquid in order to transfer well into gummy form.
With this puree ready, you’ll want to pour it into a small pot and add the honey, coconut milk, and salt. Warm the mixture on the stove. Use honey to taste, as it will be the deciding factor in how sweet your final gummies will be.
As the mixture gets warm, slowly mix in the gelatin. Whisk the mixture as you add the gelatin in, making sure that you’re clear of all clumps. As the gelatin is heated and then cooled, it will turn into the gummy-like consistency that you’re well familiar with.
Once you’ve mixed in all the gelatin, you can pour the mixture into a prepared mold or simply a rectangular glass dish. Place it into the fridge and let it cool for at least two hours.
When you pull the container out from the fridge after this two-hour waiting period, you should find your mixture has turned into a perfect gummy form! Now all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the product of your hard work.
How Long Do Gummies Last?
You might want to space out your enjoyment of your creation after you’re done with it. But how long do real fruit gummies last at home?
Gummies made from gelatin should last for about 2 weeks as long as they are kept in the fridge. If you keep them in air-tight storage containers, it should help keep them fresh.
There are no preservatives in these gummies (all-natural!) but as a result, their shelf life might be a bit shorter than your average gummies. After two weeks, they might begin to grow mold.
Eating them earlier on in this window is recommended.
