How to Choose the Right Water Distillation System

    How Does It Work?

    1. The water distiller boils the water and turns it into steam
    2. The steam condenses and cools 
    3. The steam turns back into liquid

    Once the water turns back into liquid form, it is distilled. This is because most contaminants cannot turn into steam.

    The process first begins by pouring water into the boiling chamber. When the water starts to steam, it travels through the vent on top of the boiling chamber into the condenser. The condenser is the final destination where the vapor turns back into liquid.

    There are some contaminants that can exist as a gas, such as vapor. In fact, there is a fan at the top of the distiller that chills the vapor to form water droplets. Within these water, droplets are where contaminants live.

    But this is not a problem for water distillers because they will pass through activated carbon filters. These filters dispose of these contaminants. The contaminants are then collected within a bottle or reservoir, separate from your drinking water. 

    This entire process takes about 24 hours. 

    Pros of Water Distillers

    There are a few pros and cons to a water distillation system. Let’s start with the pros:

    • Water purity
    • No installation
    • Wide range of water use
    • Investment return

    The first advantage of a water distillation system is having guaranteed distilled water. Distilled water is completely free of bacteria, viruses, and pathogens that are harmful to your body. 

    This includes metals from old pipelines, salts, and inorganic compounds. There aren’t many water filtration systems that are capable of removing all contaminants from water. Even refrigerator filters cannot fully remove contaminants.

    Cons of Water Distillers

    Now let’s go over some disadvantages of water distiller systems. Though the quality of water is improved, the taste is not. Distilled water has a “flat” taste to it because of its low oxygen levels.

    And as mentioned before, it takes 24 hours for your water distiller to finish its process. But this can be solved by running it during a day when you don’t need water or store some in pitchers. 

    Maintenance Required

    Just like any other household item, your water distiller needs to be maintained throughout its lifespan. Most contaminants remain in the chamber, which causes build-up over time. This damages your water distiller and ruins its performance.

    This is why you must clean your distiller on a regular basis. Use a mixture of water and white vinegar or lemon juice to clean the inside of the boiling chamber. Then scrub inside the boiling chamber and lid with a brush or sponge. 

    Allow the solution to sit for 12 hours in your distiller, and then empty and rinse. Once your water distiller dries, you can now use it again.
